The finance side

I started by closing the books

I spent the first part of my career on the finance side of the table. I started in indirect taxation at Gianender & Associates, then ran finance at Ornate Solar, a solar equipment distributor, and later as Head of Finance at Creative Impex, a garment manufacturer and exporter.

I handled month-end closes, GST, audits, bank negotiations and refund claims that had been pending for years. I know what finance teams need from a system because I was the one closing the books.

Workday

Then I moved into Workday

In 2021 I moved into Workday consulting. For the next five years I worked as a Senior Consultant at Makse Group on Workday Financial Management implementations: designing financial data models, setting up multi-book accounting for US GAAP, IFRS and local GAAP, building banking and settlement, and running data loads, testing and go-lives.

Approach

How I think about Workday

The ledger comes first. A Workday tenant is easy to configure and hard to undo, so every worktag, posting rule and approval chain should trace back to an accounting or reporting need.

I explain design choices in the terms finance teams already use, and I build controls into the configuration from day one rather than adding them after go-live.

Workday Series

Why I write the Workday Series

Most Workday knowledge lives in people's heads or in long project documents nobody opens twice. I started the Workday Series to make it easier to find. Both are free to read, and they're written for consultants, finance users and anyone learning Workday Financials.

Outside work

Reading, and learning from failure

I read a lot, mostly about business, psychology and how people make decisions, and I like turning what I read into something useful. That's how Books in Bytes started: whole books broken into short bytes you can read in under a minute each, from The 48 Laws of Power to Thinking, Fast and Slow and The Laws of Human Nature.

On Fridays I write How Not To, a series of short case studies on bold business ideas that went wrong, and what the execution missed. Studying failures teaches me more than success stories do, and the lessons apply as much to a Workday rollout as to a startup.
